CdA, watts and why aero wins.

What is CdA?

CdA stands for the product of your drag coefficient (Cd) and frontal area (A). In simple terms, it measures how much air resistance you create on the bike. A lower CdA means the air pushes back less, so more of your power goes forward instead of fighting drag.

Why does CdA matter?

At race speeds, aerodynamic drag is by far the biggest force slowing you down — often 70–90% of the power you produce. Small changes to position or equipment that reduce CdA can have a bigger race-day impact than training gains that cost months to achieve.

How does a CdA reduction translate into watts?

Aero drag power follows the equation P = ½ ρ v³ CdA. At a given speed, the power needed to cut through the air scales directly with CdA. So if your CdA drops by 8%, the power required to hold that speed drops by roughly 8% too — that is real, measurable wattage saved.

Why can aerodynamic improvements be worth more than increasing FTP?

Aero gains are 'free' watts: they do not fatigue your legs, require no extra fitness, and do not add metabolic cost. A 10W FTP increase can take a full training block; a 10W aero saving can be found in a single afternoon by adjusting your position or equipment. On race day, the result is the same — you ride faster.
